Hotmail is good, because it gives you full control over SPAM control. Gmail/Yahoo does it for you and I don't think they are too good at that, although so far GMail hasn't proved otherwise yet.
The other pluses of Gmail, are the ads that appear on the right side based on the key-words in your email text. This is cool, because when somebody sends you an email, talking about their product, (it does not have to be necessarily SPAM), you can see their competitors right there, (on the right side) while you are reading their tall claims. You got to see it to believe it. Try using Gmail, and have your automated responses from commercial services directed to your gmail addresses and you'll see what I mean.

I have all 3. I found out that gmail is probably the best as the IP can't be traced when you send out mail as much as Yahoo and Hotmail.

Cnet recently did a review of the free ones. Their conclusion:
Yahoo Mail Editors' Choice
For its ease of use and wealth of features, plus its newly expanded in-box, Yahoo Mail is our pick for the best free Web mail service.
I use yahoo, my wife uses MSN, my daughter uses gmail. From using all three, MSN (Hotmail) is lousy, may as well be called spam magnet, she gets 20-30 pieces of spam a day. Yahoo only lets through 1 a day at most.

I use all of them but use Yahoo the most (since I have been using it for more than 5 years).
Gmail has the best user interface (the new Yahoo email client is also good but not comparable to Gmail)
Yahoo has a host of other services, if you are a small business - domain hosting, group email etc.
Gmail is likely to get better since it has better integration with other Google products like GTalk (instant messenger), Google Calendar etc.

a yahoo address is more solid and respectable. If someone has a hotmail address, it's like sending someone a letter with a motel room as an address. And Yahoo's mail programs are far superior, especially the new Beta.

Personally, I use both hotmail and Yahoo mail. I find using two e-mail services convenient, and with hotmail I can use outlook express. Also, for a yearly fee you can save more and send larger files.

Yahoo Mail. It is free and easy. I wouldn't suggest any other company but Yahoo probably because I had Hotmail and hated it.
