It is usually defined as making enough money to support yourself.

If you are in high school and mow lawns on the weekends, that isn't a real job. If you are a Rockefeller and live on the interest from your trust fund, you don't a real job either, even though your income is $400,000 a year.

If you are a Cambodian refugee who has scrimped and saved enough to put a down payment a donut shop, you get there at four every morning to have fresh donuts when you open at 6 and you don't get home until seven p.m, seven days a week, THAT's a real job.

If you were like my donut maker, your son is now a civil engineer and your daughter just got a scholarship to the college of pharmacy at CSU, so it may be worth it.

Parents tend to want their children to have a bright future, which means a job with some potential for growth. Not that many towelling-off men go on to become car wash managers, for instance. Lots of CPA's do go on to become partners, or open their own firm.

It's providing a service for someone. If you're lucky, you enjoy doing it and someone's willing to compensate you either with money or by some other means.
