It re-arranges things in your computer memory so that they are easier for your hard drive to find (which makes it run more efficiently). It also frees up space so you can save more stuff..

Over time the files on a computer get defragmented meaning the computer takes longer to find certain files. Defragmentor puts the files back in order putting the programs you use most frequently at the top of the list. This allows the computer to run faster.

The easiest way to describe what defrag does is this...if you are like most users in the daily use of your computer you add files, add programs, download files (videos, mp3, emails). All of these items get "cataloged" by your harddrive. Think of your HD like a librarian on steroids working around the clock.

Now, just as quickly as you add files to your machine you are deleting other files. Deleting emails, moving files from one place to the next, putting them in the trash bin, etc. Modern Hard Drives aren't great at freeing up all the space that should be freed up when files are deleted. So every file that is now gone has left a bit of space that no other file can use. Defrag cleans this process up and helps to compact the harddrive. It doesn't need to be done often. Depending on use maybe 1 a month, or 1 a year. And usually you will find it will speed things up a bit.

I really hope this was helpful.

Disk Defragmentor defragments the various files of several formats stored on your hard drive, ie, it uses the storage space in a more efficient and effective way such that you can have a quick retrieval of files on your hard drive, ie, the time taken to open a specific file is a lot quicker when the disk is defragmented...

Disk Defragmenter, as the name implies, defragments your disks. Your disks get fragmented when you add and delete files, because information that should be grouped together gets split up. When you defragment your disk, all of this information gets grouped back together. You should run ScanDisk before using Disk Defragmenter. To run Disk Defragmenter:

First disable your screen saver.
Double-click on My Computer.
Right-click the Drive that you wish to defragment.
Click on Properties.
Next click on the Tools tab.
In the Defragmentation status box, click on the "Defragment now…" button.
You may get a window telling you that your drive is fragmented only a certain percent, and that you do not need to defragment it at that time.
If you are defragmenting, this will take a while. You can multi-task, but Disk Defragmenter works much more efficiently if you leave it alone.

Lindsay, that's more of Diskcheck and Disk Cleanup.

When you delete and move information, it becomes fragmented on your hard drive. What this means it is scattered and serparated. The Defragmenter takes the information and puts it all back together, or trys to. It will increase speed a little because all the parts of the file will be in one place and not fragmented. You should do this every now and then. Or at least run the analyze tool to see if you need to run it.

It cleans out your system of disk errors and can sometime free up some space on the computer. You should run a scan, a least once a month.

in plain terms basically theres files and what not all over your hard drive defrag brings all these files together towards the front of the drive so as when you give the pc a command it doesnt have to search all over the drive to find what your after it should be compacted towards the front of the drive....you should do a defrag at least fortnightly if a regular net user

It unscrambles scrambled information, basically.
