Ask a teacher to help. You will need to devote a lot of time and hard work to reach your goal. Here are some tips:
1. Get help from a teacher or fellow student who is willing to tutor or mentor you.
2. Be willing to spend hours a day studying.
3. Not only should you carefully read your school material, but you should write down important facts and info on note cards. The act of writing them down reinforces your memory. Also, the cards help during review and practice.
4. Be willing to review basic skills that you might have missed in earlier years. If you had a hard time with, say, multiplication, you will find any higher concepts difficult to do.
5. Get a basic review book on elementary subjects like math and english skills.
6. Ask the teachers for test study guides before an upcoming test.

I can't stress how important it is to ask a teacher for help. Believe me, teachers live for students who want to achieve, learn and improve. They will do anything to help.

But here's a question to think about: Why do you want to earn high grades? Do you want to go to college? Impress someone?

If you study hard and really learn something, who cares if you beat the valedictorians? Do you very best. For life. Your rewards will go beyond anything short-lived like getting to the top of a list. You will feel enriched and a great sense of accomplishment and empowerment.

Wishing your success!

First off, stop saying you're not smart. The thing you need the most is confidence in you and your abilities.
Go to any study nights or homework helps that your teacher has, especially for projects and tests or exams.
Take detailed notes and confirm notes with your friends so you can make sure that you have everything.
When going over problems that you did or questions that you answered for homework or a test, even if you got it right, add other things that are also correct answers. If it was difficult write down the teacher's way of doing it. Memorize the formula and process that is easiest for you and can be used for the largest number of problems. Memorize the other formulas as well.
Mark out three days of studying before a test. A week and a half before an exam. Reread chapters, go over problems that were difficult for you and ones you got wrong. If there is a study opportunity offered by your teacher go to that. Before exams, take a break two days before. This way you'll realize that you do need to go over things that you just learned, because you may not know them as well as you think you do.
Study with the ppl who have the highest grades. Do what they do. Study how they study. Success begets success.
Go over all the problems you get wrong until you know how to do them. If you need help, ASK FOR IT! So many ppl don't ask for help because they think it makes them look stupid.

Sounds like the only thing getting in your way is that you're not believing in yourself. If you start believing you can do it and that you ARE smart, you may surprise yourself. And even if you don't get into the top ten list it doesn't mean you're not smart, it just means that those 10 people happened to be just a hair smarter. 4 of those people could have tied, and the other six could have had 90's or higher, so if you had anything lower it doesn't mean that you didn't do an excellent job.

I actually don't know if this is true. I think it depends on the atheist and the religious person. For example, if an atheist backs up their opinions on theology with science and logic, then obviously, that person seems more knowledgeable. Not to be rude, but there really isn't too much science in religion, so the religious person wouldn't have much to go off of in backing up their belief. Some theists go to the extreme and reject science as well, so that could be it. I've known many theists who are 100x times smarter than I am. I've met many a stupid atheist as well. It all depends on the person. EDIT A person who dislikes religion would obviously not be a part of a one, so you don't have to say the word atheist. If you hate religion you're probably an atheist. I'm just saying.

So...you are an av-er-age bear with above av-er-age ambition. Hmm.. Only one way to surmount the challenge: work harder than your competition. If they have to read something only once and it sticks you (and I) might have to read it twice or three times! It's a pain being average but you can succeed. I've had very good success in a field with a lot of computer-geeky brainiacks who read stuff once and just get it. I gotta go back again and again and review stuff I studied years ago. But combined with other more intangible qualities (like being able to work well with others) I succeed. Good luck!!

Hard work and studying. Nothing comes easy nor will there be an easy solution. You will have to be willing to sacrifice other interests in order to achieve this goal. In the end you will have to decide how much to want to achieve this and if you are truly committed to it.

Listen and take notes in class. Do your homework and study well. Hard work definitely pays off. It won't be easy, but if you want it badly enough you can do it.
