Have you watched "Pretty Woman"?
It's a perfect example of the one woman and the unattainable man.
I get the sense though from your post is that your female lead isn't interested in a romantic relationship with her male companion at all, but has some other stake invested in him which makes her want to stick around.
Perhaps you can focus on that one element and see if you can weave it in such a way that it can be dramatic and believable, but not overtly so. (Take care in how you set up drama and "believability". There's a lot of examples out there in writer's books which point to the author(s) taking things way out of proportion and blowing a perfectly written plot by overexaggerating and over-sensationalizing something to the point of: "Blah! What the hell is this crap?" lol)
Sometimes, romances aren't the key in these "Rich vs. Poor" themes.
In my Price of Freedom novel, the female character initiated her romantic tryst with her male companion in the beginning--based on what she wanted and read from the books they had available to them.

Okay little shaver. If you are really writing a novel maybe you should be doing that instead of playing on yahoo.
a real writer writes--every day. Why don't you set your self a goal of 600 -1000 words a day and write, good, bad or indifferent. then you can re-write the bad & indifferent.
Also who is writing this novel? you or us? if this is such a hurdle then it seems to me you might have more problems by Chapter two. Are going to write the whole thing through a series of Yahoo questions (my characters are going to dinner-Red Lobster or Jack in the box?) That would be frustrating--especially if it becomes a best seller

She should leave because she's a writer and a perfectionist and has only loved her father so she cannot make up her own mind. She's perfect in her own mind and seeks perfection, which does not exist in human relationships. It is her quandry and her epiphany will be the discovery that she is NOT perfect either.
p.s. you don't know your characters well enough. Talk to them, if you're a natural fiction writer, they will TELL you.

I think you have answered your own question - there is just not a spark there.. I have found that if you keep writing, the characters can and will take on a life of their own - give them that freedom.. you too might be surprised what comes out of you - - it will come. It make take time to hatch but give it that time to incubate.. and pay attention to yourself, your own creativity - I'll bet it will be good..

She meets someone meek, but more insightful? She decides she's better off on her own? Kill off the male lead? Leave it open, as in they part paths with the possibility of seeing each other again later?

She's still in love with the first man she fell in love with and feels that she's settled in life even though she should be happy. No matter what her husband does he can't live up to the man from her past.

I think that alone would be enough, but you might throw in a little family drama on her side.

Try this he abuses her. Another try might be he is caught with his pants down a child's pants, or maybe she sees him with another man.
