I whole heatedly agree with you. Unfortunately we have people who believe that we should be helping the poor and funding frivolous programs, like saving the Snail Darter. What they fail to realize is that if we don't get off this rock and move into the void, an errant asteroid might solve the problems of poverty and the snail darter for us. Basically what you have to do is vote for pro-space candidates.

We need magic fairy dust.

We would need some of the basic laws of physics to be wrong to be able to reach the stars. They are just so far away. Our closest is around 4.5 light years away. If you had a super duper space ship that could accelerate til you were half way there then decelerate the rest of the way so you stopped, and the acceleration was at the limit for survival of the human body (about 3g) the journey would still take about 3 years. Reduce to 1g (so it feels the same as on Earth in the ship) and its even longer.

The amount of energy required to send even the smallest payload would be huge.

Reaching planets in our solar system is more realistic, but none even comes close to being friendly to life, let alone supporting it. Adn we have no idea how to terraform a planet (thats science fiction) - for goodness sake we can't even sort out global warming.

And whatever happens, only a very few people would be able to go into space because of the huge costs/amounts of energy required. So most people are truly stuck here.

This is out planet. We are stuck here. So we had better look after it.

In short, we will NEVER reach the stars, and we will NEVER get more than a handful of people to the planets of the solar system.

That is a question asked many many times in the history of man. We probably won't for about another 1,000 years, unless we get a big jump in Science and Technology.

Since I am not going to answer your other question I will put my comments here. The question states do not answer the question it does not say do not look at the question.
