I have traveled a lot and having a credit card is a must for booking hotels/hostels, and just in case your bank card doensn't work. It doen't hurt to have a couple emergancy travelers checks if it makes you feel safer. ATM's are pretty good in Europe but make SURE that you have a 4 digit pin number and that you have a chequing account. Ask your bank to check all this. When you are there look at the back of your card and check if it says "Plus" or "Cirus". Only use bank machines that correspond with this or it will ruin your bank card as I discovered on my first trip to Europe. Try not to travel with a lot of cash and always watch your walet. Never put in your back pocket.

I would bring some Euro in cash, and a credit card, and some travellers checks. And yes you can get money from ATM's in Europe, although you will be charged a service fee.

Yes, you can get cash from an ATM in Eurpope, but you may not be near one. In addition, I would suggest travelers checks, in small denominations, $20 s preferably. I use American Express in US, BUT, would suggest you use Thomas Cook in Europe. You may be able to have some, not all, made out in Euros, not necessary, but could save you some exchange fees. Check with your bank about all that. You can always change any remaining to US $, but, at the current exchange rate at a future date, up or down.
Do not carry excessive cash. Always, at the end of the day or sooner, check your remaining checks in your book, and record all numbers used. Be sure to check all the remaining checks to be sure that none may have been stolen from the bottom/back. This happened to me once, while my late wife left her purse at a table, while dancing. If using cash be sure you have a current, currency convertor.
Buona Fortuna! Have fun.

Try using Trip Advisor website for help in planning your trip, also Fodor's and Frommers. Have fun & don't watch the movie "Hostel" before you go! : )
