cat 5, cat 7, 6 wires in a plastic cable, plastic plugs on each end, allow high speed data transfer, come in different colors, I don't for sure what you mean by characteristics of ethernet cables

well as far as i know they're made of copper, ethernet cables use 4 pairs of twisted wires... the CAT's tell you how many twists there are in a given length. example: CAT 5 CAT6 etc. Also, when crimping cables, there are ceratin color standards to follow :) so if you want a straight or a peer to peer there are different ways to make them.

are you looking for the layout order? if you want to make your own cables then it goes like this....with the tab on the end connector away from you the wires go in this order...white-orange, orange, white-green, blue, white-blue, green, white-brown, brown
