I *love* my Playtex electric pump. I've been pumping for 7 months at work. I'm sure the Medela is great -- all my friends use it -- but this was a more affordable option (about $100 less). It's lightweight, the tote is practical, the soft suction cups and variable speed work well with my nipples, and I've had no problems with the pump.

It depends on what you need it for. If you will be pumping several times a day, 5-7 days a week, then you will probably need at least a battery pump. If you will be pumping once a day or less, then a hand pump will be fine. If you have no plans to pump at all, then don't even bother!!
There *are* bad brands. Evenflo comes to mind--it has actually damaged the breasts of many women who use it--in some cases such that the woman can no longer nurse the baby. Playtex is also bad, and I think that First Years is pretty close. But not every pump manufactured by a *good* company will fit every woman. You may try a fantastic pump and discover that it doesn't work for you. So take all recommendations with a grain of salt.
Some brands that come highly recommended are Medela, Avent, and Hollister. Whisper Wear is recommended by a lot of mothers, but I've never seen any research to back up its effectiveness, so use it at your own risk (although it goes places other pumps don't!!).

Manual pumping yielded almost nothing for me. If you only need to pump for a limited period to get your milk in or increase your production, look into renting a hospital grade electric pump (goes for about $40/month in my area). If you are a career woman and will be pumping regularly for months or even years, then $350 is a bargain, believe me!

we got the super duper Maedela brand one that is almost $350 and yes it is worth it. i tried a Playtex brand one and it wasn't so great. so we went ahead and bought the expensive one and it is totally worth the cash. different levels of suction and portable and totally reliable. i suggest it, if you can afford it, get it! and now that i am finished with it with my first child, until #2 comes a long, i am loaning it out to a friend who will be buying all new tubing and bottles. you can probably rent one from your hospitals lactation center to see if you love it too. good luck!

Ameda purely yours......... I love it... had a medela with my first and had problems.
You need one that cycles and simulates let down. If you work, get this pump and it will help you. You can buy new ones with warranty on Ebay cheaper. Also go to pricegrabber.com and look there for comparisons.
