I think we could ask the same question. Why don't the French like Americans? I'm American and I actually like the French, but sometimes I get pissed off about what I see coming out of France. For example, after 9/11, many French people were buying a book, published weeks after the event, suggesting that 9/11 was an American plot. It was so insensitive and insulting that it was unforgivable. Now, I know that I can't paint an entire nation by the actions of a bunch of idiots, but everyone seems to do that to Americans all the time. You say you don't dislike Americans, only our government, but if I say the same to you, does that help?
As I said, I actually like the French. I'm from Louisiana and am of French heritage. I speak French, and my husband is a Francophone, though not from France. We have considered moving to France, and I would like to, but I don't think I could take the French disdain for my country and countrymen on a day to day basis.
Really, American dislike of the French began with 9/11 and the Iraq issue. (And it turns out the support of the French for Sadaam Hussein was more than just a sense that he should be allowed to rule his own country. The French were in bed with Sadaam, buying his oil illegally.) Before that, Americans would say that the French disliked them and would call the French arrogant, as did everyone else in the world, but really, it didn't go any further than that. We thought you were romantic and fashionable, and we were enamoured of anything European, especially anything French. We were in awe of you, but most of us could never afford to travel to your country. I will admit, that has changed, and there is a lot of animosity toward the French these days, but I'm sure after a few years, that will blow over. However, it doesn't help that the French are always openly insulting Americans.
I'm sorry for my fellow countrymen who are so angry and hurt they can't see past it. Believe me, we don't all feel the same, but when you ask that question, really reflect on how the French feel about Americans, and have felt about Americans for many years.

Americans don't like the French because of the way they carry themselves. First the language sounds really soft compared to just about any other european language. Second, the French seem to be more self centered and put their own interests in front of others. Third, in less than 2 generations, the French have gone from loving America from saving their country from being a German speaking one to bashing Americans every chance they get. Last, who are you going to have more respect for? A 250 LB. German named Klaus who is drinking a pint of Hefeweizen or a 150 LB Frenchman named Pierre who is sipping a glass of rose wine.

I am French and I live in US. I don't really think that American don't like French. Don't generalize! The problem is that some people just look at the media, eat media, live by the media and those if there are "short minded", stay ignorant and react as the headline of the media.

This American loves people, French or not. I live in France and I'm very happy here. You can't say that all Americans dislike the French. But for those who do without knowing anything about them, what can we say? Unfortunately, prejudice has always existed and always will. And it's not limited to any one nationality.

I hear alot of people make fun of the french because they won't particpate in any wars that we have been in. Most recently the gulf war and of course being in Iraq. I personally don't have much to say about it, but one thing for sure i hate the fact that Americans are being killed over there constantly, or anybody else that's on our side. I guess people think the french aren't on our side. I was born in france because my father was in the military. We only lived there for three years, so i have no memory of it. I respect the french of course not just because i was born their, but i am french. My great grandfather on my fathers side came to canada from france many years ago. So he was known as a french-canadian. I've always felt like i had french blood in me because of the way i am. I like wine, women and song. Unlike my freinds who just want to guzzle beer and get laid.hahaha..So anyway i can see why they don't want to join-in with the fighting. The french are called whimps from people i know and i get teased about it alot, but most women i've ever known like the fact that i am french..they think it's sexy. Hope this answer's your question.
