I'm new to World Cup. I thought that when there was a tie, they had a shootout but the sportscasters keep saying Germany won on penalty kicks. There is obviously a lot I don't know yet. Can someone explain how this works? Thanks so much!

This year, FIFA's rule is that, in the event of a tie at the end of regulation play, The teams play 2 more periods of 15 minutes each. If, at the end of this extra time, they're still tied, each team shoots 5 penalty kicks. Whichever team gets more pks, wins. ...BUT, if they tie on the penalty kicks, they go to a sudden death round. And as far I know, the event is generally called a shootout, but they call it "penalty kicks" because it's just kicker v. gk, like a penalty kick. It really is a misnomer, I guess, because there are no penalties that lead up to them.

But in answer to the first part of your title question, Germany won in part because the Argentinian keeper was actually a sub, and he dove for cigarrettes instead of at least 2 of the kicks that came his way.

It's different names for the same event: if after regulation time the score is tied, there is extra time. The teams play two 15 mintues periods. If after the extra time the score is still tied, they go into shootout or penalty kicks (which is the name for when a player can kick alone in front of the goaly). Each team gets five shots against the goaly.

well the main reason why germany won was because of the referee's dumb decisions. they cheated through out the match. it was like the referee was paid to make germany win.

as for ur other part of the question. the germans won with the shoot outs which are like the penatly kicks where there is one player that stands at a distance from the goal keeper and kicks. they both are like the same thing. so u call it penalty kick or shoot out , its one in the same thing. just that after extra time(time given after the 90 minutes of play) they call it shoot out. penalty kicks are usually used durin the 90 mts of play.

I'm agree with slackster1998.
Need only add if it's tie after the first 5 penalty round, teams must go on shooting other penalties. If a team score and the other doesn't, the first team wins the match.

The penalty kicks were the shootouts. The commentators just said penalty kick because it resembles one.

PK (penalty kicks) are the same thing as shootout.
