Please don't "pop" him, flick him, spank him, or bite him back. By doing those things, you're setting an example that it's okay to hit and bite others.

The best thing you can do is try to catch him as he's going in to bite. Then stop him and say something like, "No biting mama. That hurts. You can kiss mama. Or you can chew on this." Then, give him something that he is allowed to chew on.

If you can't stop him, and he does bite you, you can say the same thing, or if you're angry and need a sec to cool off, you can set him down and walk away for a few seconds. He'll learn that biting does not get a positive reaction.

IMO, the best way to handle most infant/toddler misbehaviors is to show them what they *are* allowed to do (kiss mom, chew on a teether, etc.) rather than just punishing them for what they can't do.

Also, remember to be patient. Good luck!

I used the same method that I was told to use when a nursing baby bites the breast. I would give a good thump, (finger flick) to the cheek at the time the bite was happening. Worked for three children! Got to the point that when the child hit the age where they would threaten a bite all I had to do was form my fingers in the "flick" position and that gave them pause to think twice about it. Good luck with your efforts.

I was just talking with my sister about this today, actually. My one year old son occasionally bites. She saw a talk show recently (Dr. Phil, she thinks) and he said whatever you do, do NOT bite back. She can't remember what his exact advice was, but I'm sure you can find it on his website.

Also, to the idiot(s) who said spank the child...who the f*ck spanks a 9 month old? You people are sick... (Do NOT spank your baby...it will just confuse him and make him cry.)

biting back will not work
Children at this age copy what they see and hear so biting or hitting the child will just encourage him to do the same thing
My grandson went through a biting period and we used time out
when he bites you you need to remove him from your company and tell him no biting
It will not work immediately and you have to do it every time but he will get it and stop

i agree with diane_b_33594. my younger son did the same thing. you might also try if you can catch him coming at you ready to bite, get you hand in there and right when he bites down push his lip in. you might have to do this many times, he will get tired of biting himself and stop.

this may sound weird to you but if you bite him back then i promise that he will stop you should not bite him hard enought to make him bleed or anything but it should be hard enought that it hurts him so that he knows what he is doing hurts and he will stop that is how we got my little brother to stop biting people

You need to pop his leg every time he does it. Let him know why you popped him and tell him it's not very nice. He will stop after while, but you must be consistent with it, otherwise he will think it's a joke and continue
