That is a very good question and even harder to answer.
Homers: Hank Aaron
Average: Ty Cobb
RBI: Hank Aaron
Hits: Pete Rose
There are many different stats to look at. The best all around hitter in baseball with the most career hits was and still is Pete Rose.Considering your question of "The greatest hitter" it is hard to argue that it is Pete Rose weather he bet on baseball or not.Hank Aaron has the most RBI and Homers not Babe Ruth.If you ask for the most popular then I would say Babe Ruth but as usually is the case especially amongst All Star balloting it turns into a popularity contest. That said, Pete Rose gets my vote as "THE GREATEST HITTER" in baseball.

It depends on which average stat you want to use. Ty Cobb has the highest career batting average .366. Ted Williams has the highest career on basee percentage .482 and Babe Ruth has the highest career slugging percentage .690. You can't go wrong with any of the three.

either ted williams or ty cobb. i might say pete rose too if he didn't bet on baseball and get himself kicked out of the hall of fame. but ted and ty both hit in the .400's and ted was the last person to do so, so they might not be homerun kings, but they hit the ball, and thats the goal.
