Besides water temp., make sure the water is clean, use a large canister filter system. Is the tank large enough? are you using an UVB lamp? These animals do require more knowledge than most think, research your turtle. Good luck.

Because you're killing it!!!! Contact a local rescue to save this guy and NEVER get a turtle again. I'd guess your husbandry skills are atrocious. Proper husbandry of any turtle requires years of research, knowledge, experience, a TON of space, and a diet more varied than you own w/ some strict requirements. Find a rescue if you're not capable of providing the extensive and demanding environment they require. Stop killing turtles.

Is there a heater in the water? The water needs to be 75-80 degrees. The water may be too cold for him and that's why he's sitting under the light all day.

Did you feed your RES too much? Overlapping skin under his paws and sticking out of shell? If that's so, then give him less meat or carbohydrate food.. Give him more vegetable, remember that you should feed your RES as much as the size of his head a day.
