The most sensical answer to this question is, "It doesn't matter." This is why it doesn't matter: If we are in a matrix, we are utterly unable to escape it. We don't have the power to wake ourselves up, unplug ourselves, and get out of the pods. In order for someone to get out of the matrix--like Neo--he had to be rescued by people who were outside of it. The people who were on the outside, initially, did not become part of the matrix, I guess, since they weren't captured by the machines. So anyway, if we're a part of the matrix, we are powerless to leave it ... so what does it matter if we're inside it? Moreover, if we are awakened and rescued by people outside of the matrix, our choices become quite awful, in a sense. There are two choices: (1) Go it alone, living in a wasteland and trying to find something worthwhile, all the while being hunted and alone; or (2) Spend your life under extreme circumstances trying to save everybody else who is still plugged in. The "truth" we would wake up to would be as limiting as the "truth" we're living in while unconscious and in the pods. ... In other words, if you're plugged into the matrix, you're under someone else's control but essentially "living for yourself," in that you get to have all sorts of daily pleasures, like steak and friendship. If you're unplugged from the matrix, you're constantly evading someone else's control and essentially living for others, in that you are trying to rescue humanity. One "message" of the matrix is that while slavery to those in power is ugly, freedom can be difficult, in that it brings much responsibility.

Im really surprised by the amount of people who mis-interpret the Matrix. The actual philosophy behind the Matrix is nothing to do with 'is what we see real'. The question being asked is 'Is their such a thing as reality'?
Neo takes a book of his shelf at the start of the first movie called 'Simulacra and Speculation' by (i believe) Jacques Derrida. Derrida didnt believe their was a 'real' anything, reality is made up of different perceptions and what is 'real' to one person is not 'real' to another. For example, War is not a reality to us in the West, we do not live under the constant shadow of death or misery, but Palestinians and Israelis do. To them 'war' is no concept, it is real.
In this case, yes, we are living in a 'Matrix', the world is indeed made up of conflicting truths.
If your asking about robots from the future, then i seriously doubt it

As in the movie, "The Matrix" I presume? Here is a quick test. See that buiding over there? Climb it, jump off, and see if you fly. If you do fly then yes we are in the Matrix, if you go splat then congratulations, you win a Darwin award. Just kidding, please don't injure yourself, well maybe a little but nothing permanent or maiming, just repeatedly kick yourself every time that Matrix thought comes into your head. : )

Yes but the scarryest thing is... it's REAL LIFE
Mehahahaha...
Think about it, you have to search through lies that are a matrix within themselves, to just uncover the truth...
All a Matrix is, is a colection of Data, and m0n do we have ALOT of that... The thing is to find repeats and simularities (patterns) to be on the road to solving any Matrix ...
;-)

Say what? There will be like men in black everyone chasing people down if they know we are in the matrix. So I don't think we are.

No. Hilary Putnam has a essay that explains why we aren't just a "brain in a vat", as the popular thought experiment goes. I can't find the essay right now, but the gist is; since we can understand and formulate the question of being a brian in a vat, we aren't.
