guilt.....the liberals are being led around w/guilt as a collar. hollywood rich feel guilty because they have sooo much money, young people are made to feel guilty while being educated that america is killing the planet. they feel guilty about being american. what a bunch of ka-ka. you can see it in the reaction to the war on terror---'we are killing babies in iraq',' we need to come home'. maybe it gets back to the 'we are born in sin' claims made in churches. isnt al gore a washed up preacher? guilt is what it's about. we are americans, we feed the world...supply medical science and medicine to the poor in most of the world. millions would have died if it wasnt for the u.s.a. you will never hear al gore saying horay for america.

Who's blindly following Gore?
After six years of George Bush, anyone with half a brain will seem like a good leader. Isn't it time we had someone who actually gave a damn about America running the country? Bush sucks, we're tired of his crap.
I don't even know where you get the idea that Al Gore is anything like Jim Jones. Did you ever read about the Guyana tragedy?
All Gore is doing is coming out and talking about global warming. He's not trying to lead people to some backwoods spiritual commune.

GLOBAL WARMING/THE ENVIRONMENT IN GENERAL
Any and I mean any environmental cause or approach must be grassroots in nature. Having PhD's talk about global warming and having those representing industry interests debunk these present theories is a high level and almost an entirely futile effort. Don't get me wrong, it is great that someone with Al Gore's connections and exposure is getting the word out. However, people are people they want to see results.
Yes, the expression is now trite but still true, "Thing Globally, Act Locally". Watching the sky over a city, town or even a more rural area become darkened by smog has local impact, people take note and actually see A PROBLEM. A problem that can measured in terms of air quality or perhaps an AIR QUALITY HEALTH INDEX like the one that the provincial government in Ontario, Canada is in the process of implementing. You can measure results (however small) in terms of air quality and the affect it has on the health care system (those with breathing problems, doctor's visits, etc). It certainly speaks to the advantage of a UNIVERSAL health care system (however, actually implemented) as it actually makes sense to improve the environment as it keeps people healthy (a humanitarian cause) and when health care it publicly funded it affects the public coffers when people become ill therefore it even makes better financial sense to keep the environment a top priority.
Plus any approach must be entire with a complete overall plan (the big picture). Including recycling initiatives, energy solutions (alternatives/renewables can now present a real potential financial threat to the big oil companies and even power companies...), government involvement at all levels, public transit, greener vehicles in general (Hybrid, Hydrogen, Conventional electric, bio-diesel, ethanol), conservation in all energy arenas, ETC!
Economic viability is the real sell as many of these solutions are just that economically sensible (ensuring we look at the entire picture). Yes as more people use solar, wind and other renewable energy sources the cheaper the technology will get. Two of the newest billionaires have earned a large portion through renewables Solar (India I believe) and Wind (China I believe). Yes in many ways developing nations and economies will be the first and early adopters of such renewable tech as they are just building much of their infrastructure.
So what do we all need to do? GET INVOLVED ! Contact your local government about improving your recycling program, contact provincial/state/federal government about the adopting of these new technologies (renewables such as solar/wind), buy gas with ethanol in it and demand it, use and demand bio diesel, buy products with less packaging and demand manufacturers to reduce packaging and to offer a price break as a result. More ECONOMIC VIABILITY! After all energy diversity just like economic diversity is the safest and best bet for good long term results and return on investment.

Al Gore is not trying to be a pied piper. He is trying to get people to open their eyes to the sad shape that our world is in. Nobody is going to follow him over a cliff. He has a valid point in trying to make our world be still here for future generations to enjoy. He believes in what he is doing and with sharing what he knows with others. What is wrong with that? I don't see how you can compare him to a cult leader. You
evidently didn't read the whole story about what happened there. The Bible tells us not to judge; it does sound to me like you are doing just that.

If the 2000 election hadn't been stolen we would not have had $3 gas prices, the minimum wage would be $7 an hour, and maybe 9/11 wouldn't have happened at all or at least the Saudis would have been punished for it instead of some other random Arab country. But I suppose "Late Night with David Letterman" wouldn't be quite as funny.

The Pied Piper that wants to help the environment, so the children of the future have a future? Huh, I never thought of it like that..
I suppose we could choose to follow a man that gives us great hope with his words of wisdom, like... Most of our imports come from other country's....Or how about the guy who said... I think war is a dangerous place... OOOOH, how about the politician who quoted...Iran would be dangerous if they had a nuclear weapon...Of course, I really like the ex Governor who quipped... Sadam Hussein, you disarm.. or we will ! We could always go with the person who, walking to the podium for a speech stopped at the beginning of his address to scorn one gentleman whom did not stand to show his respect, of course, he would have to get rid of his wheelchair first.. and the same kind man whom asked a reporter once if he was going to remove his sunglasses because it was not sunny where they were, and would not drop the issue because he was offended by this. Of course, the blind reporter who has stargardt's disease (macular degeneration cause by the sun) was rude enough to keep them on. How about one of these fine men?
Oh wait... they are all the same person, and OMG, we already did!

People like answers: they want to be able to evaluate alternatives to make choices. Most people don't have the time or resources to evaluate theories themselves and rely on others to do so, especially if the others can make at least a superficially plausible case. This shows up in religion, as well as in environmentalist fads such as Al Gore's pitch, and in economic theories such as communism . The solution is to teach methods of analysis and encourage people to use them.

If I were comparing people to Jim Jones, I'd nominate George W. Bush over Al Gore for the comparison. Bush appeals to people's emotions over their intellect and discourages criticism of his administration by calling that criticism unpatriotic. He's built a following of irrational people who can't defend their loyalty to him using concrete facts (but they invoke such flimsy, nonsensical concepts as "he's not a flip-flopper!" and "he's a strong man who stands by his decisions even when he learns differing facts!")
People are recruited into cults by having their emotions and sense of not-belonging preyed upon, not by being presented with lists of facts about the cult.

What is it about human nature that will cause people to blindly follow someone like George W Bush over a cliff?
the name is interchangable. we are asked to vote every four years but we only really get to vote for 2 people , republican and democrat and what they both stand for are basically the same thing. If you vote republican we go to war. if you vote democrat we still have soldiers fighting somewhere we just dont see it all over t.v. most of us turn out like our parents if they voted for Clinton then we would vote for Gore and the same goes for W.
