Using 3 on the phone itself (Motorola then NEC) it occasionally worked but usually fell over before anything useful happened.

Using Vodafone on the phone itself, I never got much but never tried too hard.

Using Vodafone to connect a laptop to the internet through the phone, it works OK if you aren't travelling and are in a 3G area. GPRS (the service it uses when 3G isn't available) cuts limited mustard. But doing it through the phone is very pricey. If it's serious data on a computer you're after, get a datacard. Identical technology, very different pricing.
