Marriage is a unnatural convention imposed socially, and in the past the impetus has been derived from the tenets of major religious faiths that proclaim the sanctity of such a union. But as organized religion loses support, so do the conventions that have traditionally been bolstered by it.

Fifty years ago, people still had terrible marriages. But a great number of them just put up and shut up to avoid the social taboo of divorce, or the imagined repercussions in an afterlife. With the taboo disappearing and people opening up to much broader interpretations of a creator, the divorce rate rises. That's not always bad, as in some cases it saves people from countless years of misery... not to mention their children.

Because in our "new world" everyone wants everything, and they want it now! When you can't get it now...you abandon the effort. I think it can be described by the term "A Fast Food Society." Marriages fall into this category because people just started giving up. Any time I have ever talked to an older couple...when I mean older I mean in their 70's/80's, they talk about everything. The ups/downs and that (unlike today's young couples.) they made it work and they stuck it out. People "these days" don't believe in sticking it out. Again...they want good relationship results NOW, and if they have to make an effort for them or wait it out, they rather abandon the effort.

The power of women is increasing, we make a lot more money than in the past, we have much better educations than ever before..we either own our businesses or work in very good jobs.

So if the current hubby doesn't want to keep up with us then we trade him in for a newer sportier model.

I'm not sure why it is rising but I can tell you from experience that divorce will leave your life splintered and at the end of the road you will feel as if you have led as many lives as you have divorces.

the majority of the people getting married now a days... are young and dumb... usually getting married because the sex is great or getting married for looks... and then since they have no idea what the meaning of being married means.... or what compromising means... they end up getting divorced over something as idiotic as a small argument...

Our society as a whole has become disposable.. you dont repair your tv, fridge etc anymore its much easier and cheaper to just go buy a new one.... people have taken that theory to thier relationships with their friends and familys as well.. Its easier to make a new friend/spouse than to try and fix the one you have.
