14 volts is very good. that's more than you need. if your car isn't dying..then alternator is good. here's a test...with car running, disconnect the battery + wire. if car runs, then alternator is working. if you can't seem to start the vehicle, then you have issues with the starter, or the charging system (alternator, battery, starter) check all these wires closely.

A properly operating charging system should produce between 13.6 and 14.6 volts,on a 12 volt system.14 volts is within the norm. The "check engine" light usually illuminates when there is an emissions control malfunction, but not always.

Have your vehicle inspected by a qualified technician.

Check engine light probably means that your anti-smog systtem is messed up or worn out. Oxygen sensors and catalytic converters are definitely in need of replacement in a 1990 if they haven't recently been done.

Expensive repairs.

Your car is too old.
At this age a car will do well just if your a mechanic to fix all the problems!
