I have the thermostat set to Auto, but it no longer shuts off when it reaches the set temp. it just runs all the time. I have to manually shut it off and on. Is this a faulty thermostat, or air unit?

The air used to shut off and work properly. We've had this house for 3 years and just this summer it started doing this. It is the old mercury bulb thermostat.

It will keep the house cool throughout the morning and early noon , but after 2:00 forget it , it is at leat 5-10 degrees hotter than it should be.

It probably needs maintenance. Sometimes the coils ice up or the evaporator drain gets plugged when the unit is dirty. Make sure the filters are changed on a regular basis. If its on all the time, parts wear out faster and the motor could burn out, so don't leave it. Get someone to look at it.

If you are experiencing "droop" below the setpoint, the t-stat is faulty, but what you are saying about the unit not keeping up in the afternoon indicates a different problem completely. That indicates the unit is either slightly low on freon, or very dirty. Try cleaning the condenser coils with water after inspecting them. Wash thru the coils, not just the surface.

Sounds like it (you can get a new one at Home Depot,or Lowes for about $25) If its the old mercury bulb type it could just need adjusting.Take off the cover to make sure the wires are conected first though.Or it could be just hot.Does it keep your place cool??

you've some type of project with warm air stepping into the equipment. If the thermostat is staying at a consistent temperature and also you nonetheless have warm air contained in the homestead seek for unseen holes contained in the duct artwork.

sometimes an A/C runs continuously if your unit is too small for the size of your house

no its not faulty. when its on auto, it cools the room to the set temperature that you have it on. it doesn't shut off because its still cooling the house. its working just fine.

That's hard to diagnose, but there's definitely something wrong. Have someone come out and look at it.
