Most will tell you AVG and Kaspersky are your best choices. I tried both but it started bothering me. I forgot why though, maybe the updaters, system slowing.. I have been using Avira Antivirus instead and I've been delighted with it. I used to work for McAfee, but of late I'm of the opinion some free programs are better, and I'd recommend Avira whole-heartedly.
Mind you, you should use anti-spyware tools too these days. There's a Dutch program called Hitman Pro, which combines it all including a shite NOID virusscan. Since you probably don't speak Dutch, try Ad-Aware by Lavasoft at least. SpyDoctor and Scotty the Windows Watchdog (winpatrol) are also excellent. Lastly, Everest Home Edition by Lavalys will give you all the necessary information of your system, when you need it.

you should of never used your p.c on the internet without adequate security, you were putting yourself at extreme risk, and as you have said, your email and ebay has been hacked,so lets make sure this dosent happen again
download avast from http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html#3,and install this free program(register within 60 days free),this will protect you from all known viruses, worms, and trojans,as well as providing you with all the latest defenitions(virus updates)
also download these anti-spyware scanners to stop any future security flaws
1)http://www.safer-networking.org/
2)http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
3)http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
these are the best and most popular programs on the market, and they are free, spybot also has a built in resident scanner ,permenently scanning for any changes to your p.c.
windows defender works in a similar way but scans in the background and will give you the message "your computer is running normally"
adaware personal is more of a adware scanner and is also good at finding the adware that causes pop-ups
if you use these programs you should have no problems in the future,i have used this combination for 3 years and in that time ,i have had 1 spyware, and 0 viruses
good luck

I use Avast and I think it's great. It's free for home users, so you just download it and go. AVG is good, but I found it missed some things here and there.
Before you download any freeware, do your research. Don't just search for "Free virus software" and start downloading, you could be downloading malware or spyware that way. Speaking of spyware, if you don't have a program for that, I suggest you get one. I use spybot and adaware, both are free as well.

I recommend AVG . It provides free autoupdating and is very good. You can download it here;
http://www.filehippo.com/
Now I recommend you go here and download Cyberhawk. It's free and extremely good. It works with your AV and AS programs and stops infections before being installed on your computer. Yesterday my Cyberhawk had stopped 189 Malware Infection attempts in less than two months. I just checked it a few minutes ago and it was up to 191 attempts stopped. You do not have to do any setup. Just download and let it run.

Try Avast - it's free and reliable and integrates well with your email and provides resident protection: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
There's also a good standalone tool that works without the need for installation. It's called Avast Virus Cleaner:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_cleaner.html
However, without doubt one of the best free antivirus tools is Bitdefender 8 Free edition:
http://www.bitdefender.com/PRODUCT-14-en--BitDefender-8-Free-Edition.html
For antispyware protection try Ewido which reverts to a freeware version after 30 days' trial -

I have used AVG for last 12 months no problems at all,
Tried Norton its good, it works but seems to slow computer down.

AVG works and I have installed it for Friends who also like it. I tried Norton but as mentioned elsewhere it appeared to slow my PC down. Try AVG - it is free and used by millions.

You can download Norton for free with Google Pack. You have to install a downloader first, you also have the option to download some other great programs as well.
