I use Ad-aware by lavasoft.

it's free and you can get it from Download.com

I've never had a problem with it. And they update it frequently.

There are all sorts of SpyWare that get downloaded on your system when you are browsing the net and a lot of it is harmless but it pays to do a scan of your system once a week, I would recommend Ad-Aware Personal from Lavasoft there is a free home use version that you can download.

there isnt helpfull spyware, but it could be called low level spyware
these can be such spyware as ...w\t\agent,show behind, alexa related, grokloader, smitfraud b
these are spyware that will not cause any physical harm to your p.c ,but if left to accumilate will slow down your computer significantly
then there are dangerous spyware or high grade spyware, these can include cwwsearch,hotbar,zwax,win32 variants, spyaxe
these can destroy your whole operating system if not dealt with straight away, and some high grade spyware have their own special tool for removal, like the cwwshredder.used to identify and clean the cwwsearch spyware,in which there are 50 different forms of the spyware
the best programs for spyware removal are spy-bot from http://www.safer-networking.org/,and adaware se personal from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
use these two together and it should keep most of the nastiest spyware off your p.c,also download "windows defender" from http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx,this runs in the background of your operating system, looking out for any harmful changes to your computer
as with any security software ...keep it up-to-date
good luck

I can only say: "All spyware are dangerous", but not adware most adware are dangerous, but some are not. Like MSN Messenger, it could be classified as adware, since it displays advertisements (below the contact list), but it's not a dangerous program. But all spyware is dangerous, but not all adware.

You shouldn't make your own profiling, since there is too many program out there on Internet to list, and there is antispyware program which could do you that job,

My reccomendation list for antispyware program:
- Ad-aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ )
- Spybot SD (http://www.safer-networking.org/ )
- Ewido (http://www.ewido.com/ )
