A heat pump is simply an air conditioner with heating capabilities. In fact, you could actually purchase a central air unit with heat pump capabilities. However, unless you feel like you need heat in central Florida, it may not be economical to buy a unit with heat pump capabilities as they usually are more expensive. I think you're really looking for the advantages and disadvantages of central air vs. ductless split air conditioners. The answer is that it really depends on several factors. How many rooms are you looking to cool? Is the house built or being built? What kind of construction is the house made of? How easy would it be to put a central air unit in the house? If you're looking to cool multiple rooms, it's always nicer to get central air. However, it is sometimes impractical because of the amount of work needed in order to install a central air unit. One advantage to a central air system is you only see the vents. The unit is hidden away in a ceiling or closet. It also distributes the air better. As far as their effectiveness in cooling a humid house, they would be equally effective if the machines are sized right. However, a central air unit is more forgiving with a good air balancer. These are several factors to consider. I would ask for a company to come in and give you quotes on both. However, just keep in mind that many will try to sell you a central air unit because it will make them more money and have more work for their duct guys as well. I hope this information helped you.

Yesterday i was having a conversation with a Air balancer he told me the best thing was a heat pump on top of a gas furnance. He has a heat pump outside instead of a air conditioner the heat pump can cool and heat but it is a more efficient air condiner and the new state mandates have increased the minimum seer to 13 i think. It used to be a 10 seer now you can not get the low efficeiny not get them any more.Itdoes noit get very cold in florida and as long as the bosters dont kick in on the heat pump i think the pump may be better for your climate. You dont need the gas furnance. It gets cold in ohio

If you need heat and you live in Florida, then by far the most energy efficient way to heat is with one of the new heat pumps. Also for heating and cooling , the most energy efficient units are the water source "geothermal" heat pumps.
