I've been trying to sharpen knives for years and had little success until I found out about Gerber's pocket sharpener model 4307. The key is keeping the angle right and using a good sharpener. The ones that work the best will keep the angle right for you and use a diamond material on the abrasive surface. Shop around... the Gerber has these features and can be found for under $10.00 US.

If they are a carbon blade, and not stainless steel, then you can use a sharpening stone with oil. I have never been a fan of those knife sharpeners. If not used right, they will pit the blade irregularly. The sharpening stone can be controlled,a nd the edge is never out of your line of vision.
The local Kitchen Store at the Mall charges 25 cents an inch to do it professionally.
You have several choices!

LOL, Your question has an answer in it. But You just run the blade through sharpener and repeat the action if needed. That is if you have electrical sharpener. With the stone you tilt blade to the stone and run it along the stone few times. Wet the stone so you get better resoults.
Hope i helped?
