Given that prevention is the best form of cure, I would suggest you go to the likely source of the ants' presence - your compost itself.

Making good compost that heats up really HOT will keep EVERYTHING out. If you don't know how to do that, I would suggest a trip to a good composting web site. As well, after it has heated up and cooled again, you must keep it moist. If you're not making "fast" compost (stuff that will be ready for use in 14 to 20 days), this will allow the worms to get to work on it and will continue to make it a place unattractive to other critters.

I had ants in my compost bin. They did a super job of breaking up the compost into really fine granules. Their eggs fed my chickens too! Why get rid?

You don't want rid of the ants. They play a part on the decomposition process, and having them indicates that your composting is going well.

turn over your conpost regularly ants hate to be disturbed

it will also speed up the composting process

Commercial pesticides can contaminate the area around your compost pile. Boiling water will actually cook the ants, try it.

clean out compost bin,make sure there are no meat scraps or refined sugar in the bin. plant mint around the bin, this will discourage the ants. please use no pesticides.you don't need them
