This year is particularly severe as far as ant infestation. Commercial products have been ineffective and I am afraid of using too much since we have a dog and our grandchildren frequently visit. Does anyone have a safe and effective solution?

I have used this for years, my grandmother also used it. 20 Mule team borax soap, put dry soap in one of the cheapo ketchup squirt bottles that you can purchase at one of the dollar stores, apply along baseboards and anywhere you see the ants, they will carry it back to their nest and it will kill them. We also have pets and have had no problem. Leave down for several days and when you no longer see the ants vacuum up the remaining borax, and use remainder of laundry soap to do laundry. I do this every year when I first see the ants.

Being a Florist and dealing with flowers and their own insect world that follows. I for one found this solution. I was taught this as a child by my grandmother. You follow the trail to the main ant bed. If your having the problem you say you have. You will be able to find it. Take a stick move the top like a top of a funnel and pour pure baking soda in the entrance to the mound and pour plain white vinegar in on top of the baking soda. It boils the whole mound and continue with each mound you find in the yard. It kills the Queen as well as the other ants . You dont have to worry about kids, pets or the ants any more . I use this as well as to unglog or clean out pipes through out my house. It works and its cheap.

Any time you deal with an infestation you need to address not only the pest, but what is attracting the pest. You can have your house tented and that will kill the pests currently in the house, but it will not make the problem go away. You need to get rid of all sources of sustenance for the pests. Especially if you have animals, the food and water needs to be picked up at the end of the night.

I am a clean person, and every day I try to clean up and pick up after my kids and animals but sometimes it's not enough and you will get critters. Commercial products may not work at this point it seems like you will need to hire an exterminator.

I have a solution that works. It is safe and natural and it is plain yucky. Here it is: get a plastic gallon jug, everyday put your urine it it. (men's urine is better) Let it stand for at least a week. It will be terrible smelling so put it in the garage or outside.
Pour it on top and around ant beds. The ants can't stand the smell either and they move their beds. You can chase ants completely out of your yard in a week. Of course your neighbors will have to do deal with them.

I am not actually sure where you have your ant problem...if it is inside the house draw a chalk line around the foundation of your house...ants will not cross a chalk line....if you have an area you do not want ants to cross into just circle it with chalk dust...they will not cross a chalk line weather solid or chalk dust...however any inside the area can be removed by using simple ant traps and presto....ant free environment

The best solution is to scoop chocolate ice cream, and let parts of it fall and melt on the floor. Just let it get real dry, and the ants will come. Then what you do is you get your big magnifier and angle it with the sun, and zap them one by one. Not only is this method effective, it is quite fun as well. Now do the right thing and pick my answer as the bestest one.

Use a more powerful ant bait... and keep the dog and children off of the yard for a while... if you limit the area that you put the bait.. then you can just put a fence around it.. ants will still find the bait.

I like Amdro Fire-ant bait.. works good in my yard.

Grants brand bait will stop almost all ants in the house.
Sevin brand "over and out" will stop fire ants for a year.

Both are available at Home Depot

I have 3 children myself plus many that come to visit, and the best and safest way i have found is to use viniger! I bought a sprayer that attaches to the garden hose and went to town. The process has to be repeated after each rain.
