Could be the fan hitting the shroud, broken motor mount lets the engine lift up. Load factors and car types make it impossible to get any closer.
With car stopped, raise the hood and hold the brake pedal down hard. Put car in drive and watch for the engine to lift up when you push gas down and release. Also look at fan shroud under side for marks and at fan tips for wear. (Engine off). If car has electric cooling fans disregard everything and look at drive train.

C'mon guys, it can't be brakes if the noise is only when going uphill.

I think the car should go up on a rack that allows the wheels to spin freely while the engine is running.

Usually an actual "grinding" noise, if it is constant (not on and off randomly) suggests to me anyway a transmission or differential problem. Also possibly rear wheel bearings on a RWD car.

I would check the brakes first. It could be a bad U-joint if the car is rear wheel drive.

you may have 2 problems. Brakes or a u-joint problem. Both, if unaddressed, could leave you stranded or worse, cause an accident.
