Biotic material is any natural material that originated from living organisms. As I'm sure you know, coal comes from living creatures that have been crushed over the corse of millions of years. The key to understanding the difference is in the origins and the exact meanings of the terms. Biotic resource are resources that have living things as their source, though they may not be alive any more. Abiotic resources are ones which have their sources in non-organic roots, such as rock.
