Get a gold fish or a beta fish. They both live long and are fun to watch. I had two goldfish and one beta fish, they both lived long and were fun but the beta fish died first. We know the reason why is because he didnt have enough air. Our two other fish the goldfish NEVER died becuase the had a little are hole thing. An air hole for fish is like a plastic straw that puts air in the water for fish. Most people are too dumb to know that fish need air. We got both of the goldfish a couple years ago at a local fair. Normally, the fish die a couple days later but my brother decided to get a new tank with an air hole. That day he saved oiur fish! So I recommend getting a air hole or a goldfish. haha! Izzy

I agree with most of the other answers. Oscars are wonderful fish, but could be challenging for a beginner. They are not the cleanest, and they do get rather large. They can be fun though, if you are willing to fulfill the requirements for having one.

If you are inexperienced you should NOT try a salt water fish tank. While they are pretty fish, you will need to invest some money to get started, and more money to keep going.

The easiest is going to be Beta's, or some small, non-aggressive fish. Some good ideas are guppies, mollies, platties, tetra's, and angelfish. For the fish I listed, you will need a powerfilter, a heater, something to treat the water to remove chlorine and chloramine, and also a gravel-vac.

There are some great books out there to research more on getting started. There are also usually friendly folks at your local pet store who would be happy to answer your questions. Please though, make sure you are prepared and ready to go so you don't lose too many fish.

I say go with a community tank - That way you can have a wide variety of fish.

Neon Tetras are awesome community fish but they are very fragile.

There are also Pink Kissers (Guramies) which can be a lil aggro so I'd stick them with semi agressive fish. They are a pretty pale pink color.

The best thing to do is run down to your pet store and have the guy help you. You'll have to decide what type of tank you want; Community, semi-aggressive, aggressive. (Once you choose you can only choose fish from that catagory or they'll kill each other)

IF you go with African Cichlids you'll get some awesome vibrant colors (almost tropical looking). But those are bastard fish. I had a problem with them killing everything, including each other.

Oscars are ugly dull colored fish. Not to mention that they get ******* huge - you'll have to keep buying more tanks. Plus, they like to eat little fish. The moron above only said that b/c they are aggressive - not as aggro as african cichlids (my afrians killed an oscar and a paccu). So ignore the first responder unless you want something ugly, unfriendly, and about 2 feet long as an adult.

Fancy guppies are cheap, cool and pretty little fish. They produce a lot of waste material (just like goldfish do), but on the upside they mate like rabbits. IF you get a mixture of males and females, you're sure to have babies. Guppies come in a wide variety of colors.

Beta fish are best in a tank alone. I've managed to get a beta to live in a community tank. You cannot put a male in with a female (unless it is time to mate and then you have to remove him afterwards), you cannot put a male in with another male. They this thing about breeding...they are very aggressive with their own kind. I've found that in a semi-aggro, or aggro-tank they get picked on...again, they do well in a community tank.

*When I say tank, I mean tank and filter. The only fish that does 'ok' w/o a filter is a beta. If you don't have a filter you'll have to clean it once or twice a week. Gold fish are impossible to keep without filters b/c they are NASTY, DIRTY fish. They produce LOTs of waste material. IF you ever hear someone say their goldfish died, it's probably b/c the water was icky.

Fish are a pain in the ***. You have to check the NItrite, Ammonia, PH levels. You have to add chemicals to the water. They really are a pain....that's why I don't have fish anymore. If you just want color, I say find something else...like plants...

Good Luck!

Fish aren't decorations. They are living creatures. Do you know anything about how to take care of them? If you want a little "nature" then go buy a fake plant. You can't kill it and it doesn't suffer.

Chances are a fish that matches your decor will not match your lifestyle. It is much more important that you choose a type of fish that you can take care of well- they all have very different needs.

If you want some nature buy a plant. A fish is a living breathing pet not an accent piece.

My choice for your colored room is a beta. Betas can be all different colors. Male betas have more color to them and have a bigger and brighter tail. These fish are perfect gifts. I got mine from a friend and its purple, pink, and turquoise. Don't put 2 of the same sex together or else they will fight. They make a nice accessory to your room....hope you like it!!!

I keep 2 tanks in my bedroom. The first one houses my semi-aggressive cichlids and the other one houses my aggressive cichlids. They're fun to watch and are owner responsive. Be prepared to (eventually) invest more money in larger tanks and equipment cuz some of these puppies grow to exceed 12"+ in length.
