Clearly after. In 1970 you could not get a car with a 10 year 100,000 warranty. New cars are more fuel efficient. New cars have electronics and features that did not exist in 1970. Newer cars last longer. Today you can reasonably expect a car to last for ten years and be serviceable. In 1970 most cars rusted out long before 10 years of age.
Cars today have better suspensions, better handling, better brakes, better lights - both front and rear.
Cars today have more efficient use of materials and of interior space, relative to the size of the vehicle. A friend of mine had an early 70's full-size Plymouth. The trunk was so big, I could lay down in it and not touch the fenders; more than 6 feet wide. Two people could not sit in the back seat comfortably.
In 1969, I bought a new 1968 Javelin. The car was good looking inside and out. People noticed the car. Everything went wrong with it.
In 1971 I bought a new, leftover 1970 Mustang Mach I. The car was a real beauty. Even my mother liked it. I got 10 miles per gallon on gas; I needed new tires and new brakes every 10,000 miles. I had to have the oil changed and the vehicle lubed every 1,000 miles. The car vibrated so much, from the over-powerful engine, that screws were always falling out of the dashboard. I got rid of the car before everything shook loose.

It depends. Up to about 1975 cars are pretty good, then get unbelievably lousy until the late 1980s.
Now, modern cars are much better in every way that pre 1970 cars. No comparison. A modern sport sedan could humiliate just about any 1970s car. A 2006 Corvette could leave any "muscle car" in the dust. So could an Evo.

This question all depends on preference. Cars before the 70's were part of the horsepower era and stylistically were second to none. Fuel economy was dismal and you were lucky to get 100,000 miles out it before a rebuild and were lucky to get another 20,000 after. But punch the gas pedal to the floor to smoke the rear tires, and you definitely knew what horsepower and torque were all about. And of course to own one now, especially a big block. You have a pricey peace of property. Oh yes, did I mention they were simple to fix.
The cars from the mid to late 70's were gutless land yacht's of which sucked the life out of the gas tank. And as we all know it, from the 80's and to date technology has taken over the auto industry. You need to work at NASA to resolve some of the issues associated with repair. Fuel economy is higher,

They refined them each year through 1968. !969 and 1970 were good years, too. In 1968, they started with the emissions controls and performance stopped being a goal.
Heres a pic' of the '68 Hurst Olds 442

A lot heavier, wider and longer than todays cars with a ff'n huge V-8 that rumbled the ground and a 4speed stick-shift, they sat four (or slept two) in perfect comfort...the A/C would refrigerate the interior in seconds...they were the perfect 'make-out' cars, too...lol
Heres a few of the great cars from then...

Honestly, it depends on whether you know cars or not!
For example, if you know how to work on cars, then pre-1970 cars are the easiest and best cars to work on. Also the parts are dirt cheap and a-dime a-dozen.
Now on the contrary, if you are looking at post-1970 cars, then you are looking at much more electonics (especially in our present day cars). They are definitely harder to work on due to the sensors and electronics, but they are known to be much more reliable, able to produce much more power, and also better on fuel consumption.
As for style, they both have their up's and downs. I have much more respect for a vintage muscle car than a present day muscle car. They just look better, and much more classy!

Depends on what you mean by 'better'. As far as styling goes the early cars are way better to me than most of the new 'jellybean' looking stuff now. They were easier to work on also being simpler IMO. But, today's cars have excellent engine and trans controls, ABS, WAY better brakes, and better quality fit and finish (mostly).
