The hand is a marvelous machine. Nothing artificial can replace it. So it is too precious to expose to damage. And since the fingers are its tools and front-line aggressors and pokers, they have to be protected well. Imagine those fingers, especially the tips, vulnerable to injury and accidental or re-curring cuts at the top of the tip. Can you perform any work with such fingers? How about heat, chilly cold materials an extreme temperatures?
So, the nails are simply to protect finger tips, to harden them, to enhance dexterity and to make your hand/fingers look good.

Fingernails and toenails were developed in ancient animals as as protection to the vulnerable extremities. Because these animals often lived in harsh conditions, their fingers and toes were usually stubbed, scraped and otherwise injured during daily life. Those who developed a harder covering over the fingers and toes had a better chance of surviving by getting less injuries.

During evolution, some animals developed these into claws: powerful, sharp weapons for hunting. In others, who led a more peaceful existence, they stayed as simple protective covering for the sensitive digits.

To protect your finger tips. Without nails when you hit your finger with a hammer it would cause severe damage to the finger.
