In auto, the transfer case will be in 2 wheel drive by default, but when the car detects it needs extra gripit should automatically switch into 4 wheel drive and out again when it no longer needs the extra grip. The option for you to choose is for when you will be doing off road activities and want it to be in 4 wheel drive all the time. lo-loc is for when you need very serious torque like for steep inclines with a heavy load or pulling something heavy along low traction ground or you are very stuck.
