1) A small business firm determined that its earnings for the past five years could be represented by a linear function. In 1987, the company sold 15,000 products and earned $250,000. In 1988, sales were 17,000 units and earnings were $283,390. Find the earnings on sales of 20,000 units.

2) The height of a triangular sail on a boat is 2 t. less than 4 times the length of its base. If the area of the sail is 45 ft. find the length of its base and height.

Whee algebra!

1) First step is to set up some equations, start with what we know. We are looking at the relationship between # of products and corresponding earnings. The form of a linear relationship will be y = Ax + B. In this case our 'y' will be earnings, 'x' will be # of products. So we can set up 2 equations because we have two years of observation.
(1987) $250,000 = A*15,000 + B
(1988) $283,390 = A*17,000 + B
This is called a system of equations, the system has one solution because there is an equal number of equations & unknown variables (A & B). There are 2 ways to solve a system of equations, I'm going to use the more elementary method of subsitution.

First solve the first equation for a unknown variable ( the order is irrelevant), then plug in your answer to the second equation.
(1987) $250,000 = A*15,000 + B (solve for B)
250,000 - A*15,000 = B
(1988) $283,390 = A*17,000 + B (solve for A)
283,390 = A*17,000 + (250,000 - A*15,000)
283,390 - 250,000 = A*17,000 - A*15,000
33,390 = A*(17,000 - 15,000)
A = 33,390 / 2,000 = 16.695
Now solve for a numerical B
B = 250,000 - A*15,000
B = 250,000 - (16.695)*15,000
B = 250,000 - 250,425 = (-)425
Now check your answer by plugging into an original equation
(1987) $250,000 = A*15,000 + B
250,000 = (16.695)*15,000 + (-425)
= 250,425 - 425 = 250,000 (CORRECT!)
Find earnings on 20,000 units.
16.695*20,000 - 425 = 333,475

2) Area of triangles = (1/2) base * height
The wording is a bit tricky here, does "2 t." mean 2 times? or is t a variable? If t is an unknown variable than the equation has infinite solutions. So I'll assume it means "2 times."
45 ft = (1/2) base * ( 4*base - 2*base)
90 = base * (2*base)
45 = base**2
(** will represent a power, so this means base squared)
sqrt(45) = base = 6.708
(sqrt will represent taking the square root of something)
Then solve for height: 2*base = height = 13.416
Check the solution: 45 = (1/2) base * height
= (1/2) * 6.708 * 13.416 = 45 (CORRECT!)

1. 15,000V+ F = 250,000 - (1)
17,000V+ F = 283,390 - (2)
solving (1) and (2), we have V= 16.695
and F = -425
thus, earnings on sales of 20,000 units:
20,000(16.695)-425 = $333,475

2. h = 4b -2 - (3)
0.5hb = 45 - (4)
solving (3) and (4), we have
0.5 (4b-2)b = 45
4b^2 - 2b - 90 = 0
2b^2-b-45 = 0
(2b+9)(b-5) = 0
b = -4.5 (rejected) or 5 ft.
h = 4(5) - 2 = 18 ft.

15000x=250000
x=250000/15000
x=16.67

17000x=283390
x=283390/17000
16.67

20000x=y
20000(16.67)=333400

1) $333,400

1/2bh=45
h=4b-2

1/2(4b-2)(b)=45
4b²-2b=90
4b²-2b-90=0

(-b±√(4ac))/(2a)
(2±√(4*4*-90))/(2*4)=0
(2±√( 4+1.4400e+3 ))/8
b=5 or -4.5
best answer is b=5

4(5)-2=18

2) base 5 ft., height 18 ft.
