If what the other folks have suggested don't fully do the trick for the removal portion--I have had to resort to using
(and I'd try it in a small place with an old toothbrush first in the dirtiest spot!) Lacquer thinner!
It can break down so many things that regular cleaners don't--but do a small spot first, because you will want to make sure it does not bother the texture of the original vinyl.
Good luck!
Old fashioned hands and knees is STILL the best way to tackle this sort of cleaning! Sorry! It's true!

I have a vinyl floor. Once in a while, I pour small amounts of amonia (undiluted - keep windows open and perhaps a fan for ventilation) onto the floor - working small areas at a time. The dirt just melts away. In fact, I usually have to keep extra towels on hand to mop up all of the dirt. When you are done, thoroughly wash the floor with clean water. Then use mop and glow or one of the other floor waxes and you won't believe the shine!

For the first deep cleaning, ammonia & hot water and an old fashioned scrub brush. Really get after it! For follow up washes, use a Libbman tornado mop (highest rated by Consumers magazine) and hot water/ammonia. Mop and Glow after you wash will put back the sparkle on your floor.

I have to get down on hands and knees w/ soap and water or '409' to really get those hard spots. Use a good 'scrub' brush for the first cleaning. Rinse w/ lots of water, then I maintain weekly w/ just water on a wet towel (hate mops, they streak) For bathtub, I use tilex scum remover.

For soap scum I like "scrub free" none of those realy awful chemical smells!
Also, I love thos enew sponges from Mr. Clean, get out allot of stuff! Even scuff marks on tile floors!
For glue, I like "disolve it!" avail. at stores like walmart, non toxic, orangy smell. Works great on oils, lipsticks, inks, glues, crayons, blood etc.
If your floor are vynle, I used to use Mop n glow and then gosh can't remember the name.. comes in a clear bottle, squeezes out like mop n glow. add a very deep shine that lasts, and makes next cleaning easier, If you want I'll look up the bname for you. Not for other types of flooring. I also like the hoover floormate cleaner machine, even the cleaner smells great!

Try amonia and a tooth brush and painting the wood trims really helps the look too. Baking soda helps too. Zap works wonders on the old fashion tubs.
