Yes, but if you search for 'BT sucks' you'll find a lot of complaints - maybe just because more customers = more unsatisfied customers, and BT do have a lot of customers, but it put me off.

When I was looking for something for my Mum & Dad, Eclipse Broadband topped the list on 2 broadband forums. They've stayed with them 2 years now, and the connection has only gone out twice - for about half an hour each time.

There's no gimmicks. You _can_ have an email account, a static IP, a modem etc etc, but they're off by default - if you don't tick them on signup all you get is the broadband. Everything is simple, you have a web page where you can change your account type and add services like that. You can chose paper or email Invoices.

Whenever I've stayed back home I've found it totally trouble free for doing stuff beyond the web & email my folks do - there's no proxy servers complicating things between you and the net, no blocking of gnutella, bittorrent & overnet etc.

My own idea about why they're so reliable is that they keep it simple & and don't get too greedy - there's no heavy advertising or gimmick offers, so they don't get sudden surges of new subscribers which overload their equiptment and result in crap connections while they scramble to order hundreds of new servers. By relying on word of mouth they can scale much more reliably it seems.

One company I would hope never to deal with again, is Bulldog Broadband. I was unable to stop invoices and late-payment threat emails from arriving until I actually threatened them with legal action. The bizarre thing was that I'd never actually been a customer! I cancelled before connection (within the period they allowed) because we moved house. Their excuse was that email addresses had been 'leaking' from their promotion (spam) server to their accounts server by the way.

Seems I'm not alone, a 'Bulldog sucks' search is rather informative. As it happens, I was round a friends house the other day and happened to tell my Bulldog story, there were 8 others there, and 4 had similar tales about the same company.

The answer to this depends a lot on your location (ie: where you are in the UK). If the only option for connection is through a BT line, and you live out in the sticks or happen to have a 'long line' you certainly have a problem!
First of all, long-lines may only be able to connect at 512Kbps (I know as I work for BT and have a long line!). Another point is that cable providers may not be in your area right now (NTL etc) so you are like myself - STUCK WITH BT.

If you change to an ISP such as madasafish, aol, wannado or any of them, and you are stuck with the BT line for your Broadband connection - you have no hope of faster speeds, but only a better and cheaper service!
If you can get cable in your area, I suggest you go for that, then search the web for price-ranging...depending on what you use the Internet for, ok?

I am looking at the above responce LOL! Calmdown, If your gonna drink the VZ KoolAid, I have to assume you work there, @ least get DeCaf.
VZ FIOS is good very good, help desk functions will, and I mean WILL be moving Off-Shore So the POOR service we've come to know and love will get worse,Union employees to expensive. VZ knows this and will adjust before the republicans leave office
Additionally until the laws change it's gonna be awhile.

Cablevisions Optimum On Line rated best in the US, Month to Month contract so you can change anytime, but it's limited to the NYC metro surrounding area.

The answer to that question all depends on where you live, your local cable and phone providers usually have a version of their own ( Central Florida has Road Runner with Brighthouse Cable) to offer along with others such as AOL, Earthlink, ect... For DSL, the closer you are to the central office the better your connection speed will be.

You are pretty limited by what is available in your area, so choice is not always an option!

That said, Verizon's FIOS is the best speed vs. cost currently available.

If using Cable providers, I would rank Optimum Online (from Cablevision) as the best in that space... the worst are Comcast and Adelphia...

See references below for additional info and user reviews of the various providers.

Verizon!!!! And when they blow past the cable companies you will see. Faster speeds, Clearer Pictures. More choices. Try it out. You will love it. Hopefully it is in your area. If not......MOVE.
