I would like to go to live in Germany for a year, and I thought of studying the language along. Do you know or recommend any language school or any state run college; and how much does it cost; did you find a part time job and a cheap room too?

Hi, I lived in Stuttgart for 12 months, a fantastic city. I didn't speak any German when I arrived. I went to a Sprechen Schule, language school, which was called lingua viva. It was 360 euro for a 3 month course which was 3 hours per week. But there are intensive courses where you can go for 8 hours a day, but obviously these are more expensive. However there are many language schools.

I found it easiest to learn by spending time with German people and watching German TV. It is very frustrating at first, but you do pick a lot up. You definitely need to go to school though to learn the grammer. If you are a native English speaker with no other language behind you, you Will find the grammer very confusing.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy your time in Germany. it is a fantastic country and does not deserve the stereotype that it has amongst British people.

I also attended an International Spracheschule in Germany. It is expensive, or it can be. You can find a small (and I mean SMALL) apartment generally in the 300 to 500 Euro a month range in most cities.
Part time jobs are NOT common in Germany, but these 400 Euro a month jobs are becoming more common. It is hard to find one, though, since I believe you must register at the Arbeitsamt. Colleges are different in Germany, you cannot just register because you want to go. You must pass an Abitur, (like finals) before you qualify.
There are websites about living in Germany, I would start with a Google search.
Watching movies on a DVD in German with English subtitles is a good way to learn, also. And I watch the commercials on normal TV.

Agreed....watching German television is a good way to immerse yourself....somehow, you just begin to understand what's happening. You can try Berlitz schools, which are in most major cities. Lived in Heidelberg and Wiesbaden for several years.....tremendous places. Koeln, or Koln for the American folks, is remarkable. Language school can be costly so prepare yourself.
