That is hard to say, since popularity is a fickle thing that comes and goes. People who were popular for a while often fall into disgrace after their death.

Looking at overall world-wide popularity over a long time, I think that there are three men and a woman who qualify for the top accolades: Siddharta Gautama (Buddha), Jehoshua ben David (Jesus) and Mohammed, plus Marja Benjamini (Mary, the mother of Jesus).

This is a tough one! It could be George Bush & Tony Blair but i'm reluctant to call them popular as this means well-liked, and I have a problem with that.

Also, Osama Bin Laden, he's no way popular but we're all very much aware of him.

Then you have the world cup! right now that's all anyone must be hearing about - groan!!

And of course you have the obvious Jesus, Elvis etc...

But to me (this might make a few people puke - if they don't like soppy!), the most popular person(s) on the planet in my world are my parents, because without them I simply wouldn't be me.

The most I hear about these days in IRAN is Ali Daei, a famous footbalist who is blamed for Iran's poor performance in World cup 2006!
Let's not forget the manager Branco Ivancovic!;)

no such most popular person exists on the planet. popularity has not such barriers. either of them can be popular. normally a living person is popular because people may gradually forget the dead.
