It's a chemical luminescense, a lot like the deep-sea fish with headlights. I presume they have tiny electrical charges that cause the reaction to blink on and off, but you can be sure of one thing: it's not the Energizer Bunny.

they have a phosphorescent material in their abdomen(tail) that they can light up when they want, it is a controlled chemical reaction, and it is a cool reaction so that they do not burn their tails off. the light flashes are mating signals. the boys fly around flashing the girls. the girls sit on the grass stems and when they see a nice flashy boy they flash back. they meet, they mate, the female goes and lays eggs.

Lightning bugs are actually powered by small batteries, which are maintained by lawn gnomes. Ever notice that when the gnomes are gone, the lightning bugs are too? Coincidence? I think NOT! lol
