Because it is a metaphor. If the heart were really broken, you would die, because it would quit pumping life giving blood throughout your body.

Hmm.... May be the sound card in your heart is having some trouble. Get a Creative Audigy 2 Heart ZS. That should do it. Not only you can hear your own heart breaking but also break your neighbours hearts as well..
