What about a bike ride at your local Metro Park, or a nice hike at one of them.
As per a vacation?
I would say that State National Parks are a great way to go. Only you will need to bring your own tent and meals. Also, around some of the parks there are camping sites owned by individuals sometimes they are a little cheaper. And, you can find lots of cheap entertainment for the family, ie. water sports, trails, nature adventures by the parks workers for kids (we earned badges as Naturalists), plus on the grounds there are other kids...etc.

Go to the beach. We buy a few loaves of bread @ $1.50 each & tear them up & feed them to the seagulls- my daughter has a blast !!!
