The United States of America. However, recently it seems that differences in belief and custom are dividing America in two for many reasons. One of the main reasons in my mind is the unwillingness of Americans to take blame on themselves or even not to blame at all (EX: Katrina) which branches out to many other consequences. Also, even those that preach tolerance and understanding are unwilling to tolerate those other views of the people that preach steadfast belief and loyalty to one cause. Do you believe America can be saved at this point?

I think I see what you're talking about, and what I see is a bunch of people calling themselves variations of 'hyphenated-americans', because of the Free Ride potential, AKA 'gettin' over', meaning somewhere in there, somebody's getting something they don't even PRETEND to work for. Then you have the Mexican and Indian war belly-achers, and the teeming masses at the gates, trying to get in. Teem, masses, teem! LOL
Yes, america's woes can be expressed in Dick-and Jane simplicity, so simple, even your congressman should be able to 'get it', but they don't. Instead they play appeasement politics to 'minority' groups, I say this country we're talking about is called the United States Of America, and you don't like it, get the hell OUT!. Foreign countries have their representatives on our soil, deliberately spreading divisiveness, California's got something called Mecha, that's pretty interesting that they let it go forth in the school system like that, of course people have called California the Little People's Republic for a long time, now. It could well be that at some point, California tries to secede from the Union. Some would shed no tears at seeing it leave, either. What's need ed is a unifying concept, a commonly held belief that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, and a common stand against those that would whittle away at america's periphery and see fit to do so with impunity. I also think we've got clowns in our own government who would like to see america as it is transformed into something that would be more lucrative for them, which calls question on their motives for seeking public office in the US to begin with. Money talks, as they say...

If the citizens of the United States would practice the customs of this country instead of trying to be divided by where they came from, then maybe we have a chance. I mean I was born and raised here in the United States. Why should I practice the customs of another country?

People taking responsiblity for their own actions is a modern problem that is not isolated to the United States.

Overall, the United States has made it through differences in belief and customs in the past (ie slavery). I believe they will survive.

I agree that American's have an unwillingness to take responsibility and that they tend to shift blame to others. Yet, Americans are like a family: we may fight like cats and dogs but let someone try to mess with us and we rally together and stand for each other. Yes, I do think there is lots of work inwardly, but as the people continue to love this country, vote for what is right and good, and support the US in his or her own way, we will stand strong and be the best country in the world!

If the United States stayed united through the Vietnam War, where there was much more significant division with then president Lyndon Johnson (Democrat), then what is currently happening is a small bump in the road. Tens of thousands of americans died in Vietnam with protests everyday. Don't think we are even close to that. In two years there will be elections for president and everyone will get a chance to elect who then think will change things.

america is becoming more divided because in the past, it was everyone's dream to come to america and take advantage of the freedom and opportunities. the new americans would come here and be more than willing to assimilate and become an american, no matter from where they came. today, it is still everyone's dream to come to america for economic reasons and because you can be what you want in this, the greatest country on god's green earth, but they no longer are willing to be americans.

leaders keep us divided for their own purposes, so that they might stay in power. african americans for example. their leaders are jessie jackson, not so much anymore, and al sharpton. these two continually keep AMERICAN CITIZENS from reaching their full potential by keeping them as victims status. why would anyone want to be/stay a victim? everything is there for their taking.

new people to this country will not assimilate, they want to come here, take advantage of all we have to give and then remain cloistered in their own culture. these are the things that, over time, make us unable to tolerate differences. america is different and we have the right to live our lives in this way, but it is also our failure to become americans that will do us in.

If it really came down to it, which I highly doubt, the military would prevent us from fragmenting into different nations. The brave men and women who serve in the Armed Forces come from every state in the Union and the generals would not allow our country to splinter. Debate, discourse, and discussion can wrangle out most of the problems facing us today. I wonder what the military and intelligence leaders will say about Bush once he is no longer their boss.

america is the GREAT AMERICAN MELTING POT , people have always held different beliefs here. i do think tolerence of other RIGHT TO believe as they wish is at a low and its worrysome. the real divider here is $$$$$ the have's and have nots so to speak. families who work 80 hour weeks at LOW WAGE jobs and can't keep food on the table or health care. meanwhile fat cat politicians create new ways to make more money off our backs while bombarding us with messages of fear on everything. minimum wage is a joke. those who eat .... those who don't......
