You already have a really great answer from the sailing person, but I will give it a try, because I used maps all the time in the Army.

1.) Maps tell you where places are.
2) Some maps show you terrain features, such as mountains, hills, depressions, saddles, valleys, and where water is.
3). Terrain Maps, in conjuction with a compass, can show you where you are at, by shooting an azimuth, at two distinct terrain features, and running a line from both of them, where the line intersects, is where you are at.
4) Maps show where property lines, county lines, city limits, state borders, and national borders are at.
5) Using a map properly, you can plan a road trip, calculating your mileage, how much gas it will take, where tourist spots are at, where hotels/motels are at, etc.
6) If you know how to use a map, you will never be lost.

The types of maps are:
1) The ones used for directions
2) Maps used for political purposes.
3) Terrain Maps, also know as Physical/Elevation Maps
4) Maps used for Historical purposes
5) Pictures taken from aircraft, or sattelite, know as Areial Maps
6) Meteorlogical (Weather) Maps
7) Road Maps
8) Grid Maps
9) Longitude and Lattitude Maps
10) and last, but not least, Global maps, and Globes

.
The difference between a map and a globe is a globe shows you the big picture of the world, how it looks in its totality, and of course it is round.

A map is flat, it shows details, of segments, of the earth.

I cant insert a picture in here, but if you type in the types of maps, into your search engine, you will find pictures of them.

I hope this helps!

practical answer time. I depend on maps in my life. I sail and spend alot of time with a map for purposes of navigating in safe waters. My map also keeps me from being lost when on a long sail and also helps me to estimate my speed as well as time of arrival. This is known as dead reconing. I take a compass reading based on an azmuth line with a fixed object on shore. I then plot my position on my map based on this reading. in a set amount of time, asy 15 minutes, I take another reading on that same fixed point and plot another point on my map. I now know the distance I traveled, direction I traveled, exact location, and can make a fair guess at how long I'll need to travel if the wind stays the same. So I can then figure the crew's activities based on that, like below decks breaks, meals, sleep schedules ect. Based on my crew needs at a given time in the run. So, the map is basically the king of my sailing rig.

I liked both the previous answers but will add another. I am a truckdriver and use maps everyday to find the places I need in order to deliver the freight I am carrying. So you could say that without maps, all the truckdrivers would get lost and it would have a major impact on our economy.
