Weather you personally use it or not MOST of the major advancements on the net were a creation of Porn.
The first chatting software was written for PORN sites.
The first video TV services, streaming video over the Internet, were PORN sites.
So, weather you like porn or not, it HAS been, and will probably continue to be, the major driving force of the Internet.

Early on, yes, it was a major driving force, in terms of the "business" side of the Internet. They were among the first to be able to generate revenue for their products.

These days, though, I would say there are many other drivers of growth, such as music subscription services, gaming sites, premium news and business content, etc.
