I have enough funds to live modestly for the rest of my life if I downsized to a barn or a straw house. I've opted for either one because It's been done successfully before and they need the least maintenance and energy. What's your take on it?

I'm so glad that most of you think it's a good idea. I am concerned about the environment, and I'm equally concerned about my reliance on the 'things' I accumulated through the years. They seem so burdensome lately I must get rid of most!

Plus this rat cannot race anymore - I've turned into a scaredy-cat - lol.

I'm leaning (no pun intended) toward the barn. The loft-like interior lends itself to my preferred decor.

Thanks again for the encouragement!

I think it's great! Walk the path least traveled and all. I also think your light years ahead of most people. Resources for stick built homes are becoming more expensive and harder to come by. Also anything that is going to take less energy is a winner. There is a type of construction called "green" building. It is really gaining momentum. We should take responsibility for our environment and choosing to live in a home like those you are considering will become more and more popular as people educate themselves. You are actually a bit of a pioneer, by showing others that you can live in a non-traditional home and be comfortable, you will be normalizing it for others. Good for you!

Great move. I am envious. An alternative haouse can be dsigned and built at a lower cost and can be more energy efficient than a conventional house. I have been researching mud brick for a while.

Good for you in realising that you don't want to work your **** of for the rest of your life just so you can conform. Get what you can afford and don't be dictated to by conformists.

I'd go with the barn. I also think it's cool your not into having an ostentatious lifestyle with some absurd McMansion. Go for it and enjoy life, who need the rat race.

I would live in a barn if it had plumbing. I tried it once before without, and it's hard. But you do whatever you are happy with...if you think you'll enjoy- I say go for it!!

I'd do it if I could afford it, I'm getting sick of city life. But do keep a close eye on your funds. Good luck.
