It baffles me too. Everyone is up in arms (pardon the pun) about Iran arming themselves with nuclear weapons... but what would you do if your country was surrounded by nuclear countries. Iran is a close neighbour of India, Pakistan, Russia and Israel who have weapons so what does the US government expect? It's like telling someone they can't do something; it only makes them want to do it even more. In the case of Iran, the debate has turned into nationalistic principle instead of the destruction these weapons can cause. The US goverment or rather Bush needs to be a bit smarter about the rhetoric it uses in international relations.

Yes, there is a Rule, but every time someone figures out what's goin' on......somebody goes and changes the Rule.

Okay, that wasn't serious, but this is...do you honestly in your heart of hearts not believe or know that other countries have Nukes?

And, just how many countries are we controlling right now?.......I must say, we sure have more Nukes than we could ever need or even use but generally it has been our nature to just invade a country rather than control other nations by trying to tell them what to do....that has just never worked out for us.....

We have all those Nukes because we can...and we definitely lie about how many we have because that's the rule and we don't play well with others so our Nukes have to be the biggest, the baddest and (pun intended) the bomb.....

Yes, there's a rule. It's called the International Nuclear Arms Anti-Proliferation Treaty, passed by the United Nations and ENFORCED by the United Nations Security Council, of which the United States, Russia, China, France and quite a few others are members. The whole idea is to limit the number of nuclear weapons already in existence and to keep what the UN calls "Rogue Nations" from acquiring them.

Because USA is The BOSS MAN!!! In fact, we could cure a lot of the world's problems if we just unleashed about half a dozen strategically placed nukes in my humble opinion! I invoke my first ammendment rights to say this!

By the way, I disagree with a couple above that claim we don't have that many nukes! We have over 50 Trident Submarines with 20 Nuclear warheads each that can go like 10 years or more before refueling and can launch a strike from virtually anywhere at anytime! And that's just a small sample of what we have in our NUCLEAR arsennal!

The reason is that we are the United States. We run the world and we are in control. We cant let every little 3rd world country have a nuc. All hell would break lose. Countries would start to blow each other for any little thing. That is bad news for Americans. the real reason is that we are looking out for Americans safety. Ive traveled the world and seen allot of countries. I'm in Bahrain as I'm typing you this message. Everyone even the damn Muslims want to be American. So if we need to make a few people mad at us. Its for our interest. If you don't like it you can always come to Bahrain and work for 30 BHD that = about 90 US a month. And you still wont have a damn Nuc. Just trying to open your eyes.

That is just the result of the theory of 'balance(?) of power'. That is rooted in the COLD war i think. Soviet Union and the US experienced the 1962 Cuban Crisis and realized that the risk of a nuclear war would result in Mutually Total Destruction. So they started first the 'Strategic Arms Limitation Talks' and START (SA 'reduction') at the same time Reagan started the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI)= Star Wars. This is the answer of the question i think. Yeah, there are many treaties limiting nukes but that is something different as you said. Soviet Union decided ownself destructing its all nuclear armaments because of the collapse the communal economy. That choice determined the hegemony of the US today also...

We CAN'T have as many nuclear bombs as we want. There are several treaties and agreements that limit the production and total supply that we can have. Also....the countries that we are against having Nuclear Bombs are the UNSTABLE countries that are currently at war and have NO treaties signed governing the bombs (i.e. Iran, North Korea)

Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaties keep the number of nuclear countries constant.

That is a very, very good question. I don't know exactly what the Geneva convention says, but I know the Bush administration has violated several of their principles. Yet we are supposed to be the best country in the world.

We don't have the control - but we want it.
Why? Because we want to feel secure and on top and number one.
"White Man's Burden" is a great poem that sums up the American (and some Europeans) few of the rest of the world.
Search it on Google and read it - if you are American, you'll be ashamed.
