speaking in tounges is one of the fruits of the Spirit, but I don't believe it is required(some people do believe this), but I believe I have the Holy Spirit living inside of me and I have never spoken in tounges, but Jesus said in Mathew 7:
15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.

In Galatians chapter 5 they list fruits of the flesh and fruits of the spirit, when you have the sprit of God you there should be a change. The fruits of the flesh that you used to grow should be replaced with the fruits of the spirit. When you see the fruits of the spirit I think that is a good application for knowing them by their fruits
Galatians 5:

16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery,[c] fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders,[d] drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

If you are a Christian then you are Baptised in the Holy Spirit. The apostle Paul says in one of his letter's that tongues is one of the lesser gifts. This isn't saying that it isn't important.
1 Corinthans 13 it say's 'If I speak in the tonuges of men and of angels yet I have not love I am a resounding cymbol.
I speak in tongues. Many genuine Christian don't though, and they are clearly baptised in the spirit. Billy Graham was one. The sign that you are full of the spirit is that you have Jesus in your heart.
You might not feel Him, but then again how often have you fealt your blood pumping round your heart?
Jesus said, 'I am going to send you a comforter' this was the promised Holy Spirit. So stop worrying and trust the Lord Jesus. More importantly the use of Tongues is for sharing the Gosple. Read Acts 2.

Speaking in tongues is not necessary. It is one of the gifts. Evidence of the holy spirit is a change in your desires and actions. Some people feel extremely different when they are saved and some don't have any fireworks at all.

I speak in tongues (and no I am not mentally ill). It took a lot of prayer before it came to me. Like someone said above, at first you are like a baby level with a limited vocabulary. Over time it becomes easier and your vocabulary increases. You will start to understand what you are praying and people with the gift of discernment will be able to interpret. You will also be able to speak in other languages that you cannot speak yourself (for example German) and you may be able to communicate to someone else in their language. Speaking in tongues should be done according to the bible. That means you pray alone or once in while in a small group with an interpretor. It is not for showing off. If you are sitting in a church of people mumbling and shouting out this is not biblical and you should leave. These kinds of gatherings scare off newbies and damage the credibility of our faith.

If you are self-conscious you will have difficulty. I've seen people cry and get real upset trying to "force" this gift. Speaking in tongues does not make you a better Christian. Read what Paul has to say on the subject. He puts it in perspective.

you have to be really really careful with this area of spirituality. There are rules, listed in ithe Bible, about this, one of the most important being that there has to be an interpretor. If one person in a congregation is gifted to speak in tounges at a specific moment then there is also one person in that congregation who can translate.

Speaking in tounges is not saying "I took out the trash and i saw a bug...and that little bug said to me praise to Lord..."

neither is it a time to give out prophocies.

it is a hard thing to know, as many times it is made up, but it can happen. the annointing of the spirit is still possible, but you must be very careful, remembering that God is not a God of chaos. I went to a church once where everyone started mumbling and calling out stuff, and I left immediately, that is not a 'speaking in tounges situation' that was a chaotic situation, where there was no speaker and translator. it was simply people all talking at once.

so just be careful, but yes, it is possible, and it is an effect of being baptised in the spirit, but it rarely happens.

I read a thesis where the speech of those speaking in tongues was analysed. (remember it's claimed that this is a real language) From several hours of recordings the researcher was able to make out perhaps 150-200 separate works or sounds. If this is a real language then it is a very limited one and would be on the same intellectual level as the average 4 year old therefore.

Opinions about this vary among Christians. Pentecostal and charismatic Christians do look for speaking in tongues as a sign that you have received the Holy Spirit, but you can also look for other "gifts" and "fruits" of the Holy Spirit, as described in St. Paul's letters.

Traditional churches, such as the Catholic, Anglican, or Orthodox churches, don't look for signs, but simply trust in God to accomplish this in the rite of confirmation (also called "chrismation"), where the priest or bishop lays hands on the person and prays for him or her to be sealed with the gift of the Spirit.

speaking in tongues in the Bible specifically talks about the Apostles speaking to large groups of people - and no matter language the listener spoke - Hebrew, Greek, Latin, etc - everybody there could understand the Apostles in their native tongue. So 10 people from different countries with different languages could hear an Apostle speak and they all understood it at the same time like they were hearing their own language.
The babble that comes out of peoples mouths today is exactly that - Babyl(on) - and warned against in the Bible.

Some churches combine being indwelt by the Spirit and being baptised in the holy Spirit. Others separate the two. As long as you are a Christian, whether you speak in tongues or not, the Holy Spirit dwells in you.

Romans 8:9 says "But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. "

No, actually speaking in tongues is just babbling and people are faking it . You are not really communicating with anything or anyone. If you really have the spirit you will know. It is ineffable - which means you cannot describe it to someone else.
