Believe it or not, cats CAN be trained. It takes patience, but it can be done.

Show your new kitty the "doggie-door" and tell her that this is her special entrance to her "bathroom". Also show her her litter box and she'll get the hint. Like I said before, though, it DOES take patience.

Don't give up on her.

I don't have any experience with doggy doors and cats, but I know they can be taught to use them. If it comes down to the garage being her only option for litter, she'll get used to the temp change. Cats like to be able to dig and bury. Typically spotting is a sign of stress or a medical condition.

If it's possible and you can convince your hubby, find the room or a corner of the basement that you use the least (a spare bathroom or the utility room) and put the litter box there. The best way to keep it from smelling is scooping it daily or every other day and using a good litter. I used Fresh Step Scoop for a while but the perfumy smelly got to me and I switched (but I live in a tiny apartment). I liked it because the clumps were hard and didn't fall apart when you scooped the box, so I might actually go back. Tidy Cats Scoop isn't as good with clumping and the smell hits sooner. My husband used Arm and Hammer while I was gone and said the smell stayed away but didn't test the "clumpability".

Two problems I would like to address. Why does your litter box smell? Mine doesn't. I have 2 cats. Aren't you changing it frequently? It sounds like your husband just doesn't like the cat and is using the litter box as an excuse not to have the cat inside. Men are stupid, and I can say that because I happen to be one. Threaten to withhold "whoopee" in retaliation.

The other problem I foresee is that, if you leave your cat in the basement, he will not receive the love and affection from you that I think all cats deserve. Having a cat (or any pet) is not just a matter of feeding it and letting it fend for itself. If your cat has its doggie door to come and go, I fear that one day he will just go and never come back. If he's in the basement on his own, and you don't spend time with him, he will just venture off and find somebody who will.

So, I would work on changing your husband's mind, that is, if you really like the cat. Men's minds are easier to change than a cat's habits.

I would try setting a food dish on the other side of the door. When she gets hungry and smells it she will go through.Just make sure the door is not too heavy for her.If she smells the food and is still reluctant or can't figure it out a little help from you should show her how to get through.Exploration of the new area will turn up the box and if she is trained she will use it.

Go to the other side and open the doggie door and hold a treat for her to smell (while you hold the flap open) and entice her through the door. Call her and wait till she comes through the door before you give her the treat. Just keep doing this till she catches on.
