It means "to love", but when said to a person of the opposite sex or a family member it becomes "i love you" .

Aishiteru is the closest expression couples have to express love to each other. Sometimes it is more romantic, though, to use the English "I love you"

It's not one word, it's two.

"ai" - romantic love
"shiteru" - present tense (polite form, I think) of "to do"

In Japanese, meanings are often implied. The speaker doesn't say "I" or "me", but infers that he is the subject. The speaker doesn't say "you", but infers that she is the object.

Not as formal as aishiteimasu, but literally when spoken to another it translates into 'I love you'
