I have asked many people that have ear plugs (piercing/body modification, stretched ears), and they all seem to get the same problem... they get a bad smell. Beside washing them daily with soap and putting drops of perfume, I wonder if there is people out there that know good tricks, special reciepes, sold products, anything!?

Thank you for the first two answers, but I did precised in the my question... BESIDE washing :) Alcool/Peroxyd on a daily basis won't do anything. Yes it is caused by the body's fluids, oils and dead bacterias. But no there is no infection or disease, everyone has it, even after years of wearing the plugs... So I am more seeking for some special tricks people might have discovered and wish to share! Thanks!! :)

I found out on the internet that using wood plugs instead of plastic/horn/etc ones usualy helps. The wood sucks the moisture and therefor most odors are eliminated. Thank you for your answers guys!

I would think that keeping the plugs and holes clean would be the best way. The smell comes from a build-up of dead cells and oils, and surely some bacteria. Soap and water daily, or even a swab with alcohol or peroxide periodically should work.

I suggest that you wipe them down all around the plug with rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball. After you get the alcohol all around the plug, twist it in a circle to make sure that the alcohol is evenly distributed, that will get rid of any stinkyness that might be caused by an infection or fungus.
