Would depend on how you define "a religion." For example, would you count every independent Free Bible Church and Friends Meeting House, etc., as separate? Some would argue that every Amish Patriarch is a church unto himself, with his family. Is every witches' coven a separate religion, or do you lump them all together? Or do you have certain categories, such as those creates by anthropologists? What do you consider a religion as compared with a cult?
There are at least hundreds of distinct creeds, possibly thousands, and arguably millions. If you are going to college, try taking a course in the Anthropology Department about religion, then in the Philosophy Department, then in the Psychology Department, and perhaps the Sociology Department will put in its two cents worth. Some colleges even have a Theology Department. You could write your doctorate on the subject of how to classify religions!

The number of known religions is huge. The number of large, currently-followed religions is somewhat more manageable. From most popular down to the statistically small ones, they are: Christianity, Islam, no religion, Hindu, pagan/animism, Confucianism/ancestral, Buddhism, Sikhism, and many other traditional or recent belief systems.

A lot... but Protestant, Mennonite, Mourmon and religions like those are off shoots of Christianity and Catholosism. I think the world can be devided into several groups.
People that believe in God
People that believe in God an Jesus.
People that believe in God and Jesus but don't think that Jesus has come yet.
And
People that believe in Their God but will kill you if you say your God's penis is larger.
